Hi I am 23 years old and I work at a daycare. There is one little girl in particular named Kenzie and she is 4 years old. Kenzie spits at people, doesn’t share, throws toys, has an attitude, calls names, hits, kicks, etc. None of the staff know how to handle her very well. I have tried putting her in the corner for timeout for 4 mins, but the problem is she won’t stay in the timeout chair! Kenzie will do anything to avoid timeout, she screams, runs away, talks back, etc. After a while, I just give up and tell her parents, who just apologize for her behavior. It is getting very out of hand and very stressful for myself and the rest of the kids. I don’t understand because all the other kids will take timeout when they misbehave, and it is very effective. After the timeout, we just go over, tell them what they did wrong and they say they’re sorry and we give hugs and kisses, tell them we still love them, and let them off of timeout. This is NOT the case for this little girl. Does anyone know what I should do to get her to take timeout?! Oh and don’t say spanking- it is against the day care rules. Timeout is the only option. Thanks! -I work in the 2-4 year old’s classroom, there are about 20 kids in the classroom -we have 4 timeout chairs, one in each corner of the room so we can put multiple children in timeout at the same time. -We start the timer for their timeout once the child is seated on their bottom
