“Stay quiet, guys.” The cold wind of the night carried Ana’s words across the treetops over to the branch I sat on. Through the black sky I could see her perched up on the tree next to mine, her blue eyes glowing in the dark. I nodded and blinked my left eye and then my right. Ana understood and began to lean out of her tree to whisper something to Arrow, our companion in the other tree.
My fingers laced themselves around the trunk of the tree, ignoring the stabs of the bark. Leaves hung above and below me, swinging down to touch my hair and I balanced easily on the thick tree branch. Glancing down, I could see the woodchips that made up the forest floor. If I were to fall, I would die but I knew too well how to stay up in the tree. Ever since I was on the run, I’ve been hiding.
“They’re coming!” I heard Ana hiss. I glared around. How did she know they were coming, I don’t know? I stayed silent in the tree.
Suddenly, I heard them. Twigs snapping, men yelling, and dogs barking, a mob of people came stomping through the woods. Flashlights scanned the ground in front of them and the bloodhounds sniffed the floor angrily.
“Are you sure you saw them, Dan?” One growled to another. A dog barked.
“Why, there were three of them! Two girls and a boy. The girls were Waters, I’m sure of it, and the boy a Fire. He had hair as white as snow but don’t let that fool yah!” A guy replied. I heard Arrow hiss from two trees away.
For about five more minutes, the mob waited there, looking around and calling. They banged trees. They cursed. They had guns.
Ten more minutes later, the forest was quiet again and I heard Ana hopping down from the tree next to mine.
“Come on, let’s keep moving.” She told us. I looked around cautiously before gliding down. I saw Arrow following.
“Those guys are lucky they didn’t find us,” He growled. “Or there would’ve been some damage!” His red eyes flickered like fire. I roused my hair with a shaky hand.
“Quit it, Arrow!” Ana cried. “Even a Powerful couldn’t stand the chance of a bullet through the heart!” I swallowed and glanced around, afraid of the men coming back.
“Where should we stay for the night?” I asked, shivering. My voice sounded weird in the silence. Ana looked at me, her fists balled. When she realized how frightened I looked, she relaxed.
“I heard some Earths from downtown talking about an abandoned house just a few miles from here. It would make good shelter, better than a tree, at least.” Ana thought aloud to us. Looking at Arrow, I knew he was thinking back to when he had a bed to sleep in every night. I could see it in his red eyes. When he noticed me looking at him, though, he ran a hair though his spiky hair and looked at his feet.
“We better hurry than.” I told Ana. I didn’t want to spend another night in a tree. Glaring at me with her glowing eyes, Ana spun and headed off at a sprint. Arrow followed and I brought up the rear.

The house was creepy looking and creaked when we stepped into it. It was in the middle of nowhere in a field with cornstalks up to my chest and looked as if it should have been demolished a hundred years ago. The roof caved in right when you stepped through the big hole where a door belonged so you had to duck. Once you overcame the caved in roof, the inside was actually suitable for shelter. It had sturdy floor boards in some places and a part of the wall that looked like an old fireplace. The roof had some holes but mostly it hung over carefully but threatened with creaks and groans.
“It’s a disaster waiting to happen,” Ana commented, running her fingers along the dusty wooden frame of a window. Turning to us, Ana flicked her dark brown hair back and gave a smirk. “But it’s better than a tree.”
“It’ll do.” Arrow added, grumpily. I glared at him and then searched where we should sleep.
“I’m sleeping over there, next to the cave in.” I told them. Next to the caved in wall was a small space for me to squeeze into. Ana eyed it.
“Whatever, but if that wall falls on you, don’t expect us to be surprised.” Ana’s lips flickered into a small smile. I just stared at her. I hadn’t heard a joke in a long time.
Forcing myself to smile, I choked out a laugh.
That’s what years of being alone does to you. Makes you hard and untrusting. But now I had Ana and Arrow.
“I don’t know about you two, but I’m going to bed.” Arrow grumbled as he went off into a corner and fell into a pile on the floor. His white hair rested against the brown wood and I could see his red eyes flicker once and then close.
“Good night,” I whispered to Ana as I went to the slot in the cave. I slid right in. Within minutes, my eyelids felt heavy making me surrender to closing them and falling asleep.
This is all i have so far. Please help me make this better. I’d like any advice.
